SpongeBob SquarePants-Legend of the Lost Spatula is a platform action video game developed by Vicarious Visions and published by THQ for the Game Boy Color handheld game console.
Spongebob will find the lost spatula of the Flying Dutchman or something so he can be a great fry cook. You go all over Bikini Bottom looking for the four oven knobs to open the way to the Underworld to find the spatula. Personally, it reminds me of the episode with the squeaky boots, Spongebob’s desire to be a great fry cook, and Krab’s greed combined.
One plus is that all the characters are there, as far as I could see-Sandy, Squidward, Mrs. Puff, Krabs, Plankton, you name. The places mentioned in the show are there, including Barg’n Mart, but you can’t go inside, and Jellyfish Fields.
A big minus, however, is the horrendous controls. They are slow, unresponsive, and dying is all too easy. Of course, you don’t die, Sponge just loses his pants and underwear, and you start over. When you defeat an enemy, they run off in one of two directions, usually towards you. They collide with you, and even though you beat them, they can still hurt you! Now that is a gyp and a half.
Nice and colorful for a GBC game. The characters are simple yet very similar to how they look in the show. While relatively crude, the graphics are reminiscent of the style of Spongebob Squarepants. Overall, not too horrible for a GBC game, but pictures do not make the game.
