Baten Kaitos: Eternal Wings and the Lost Ocean – the perfect combination of RPG and card. It was available by Namco in 2003 for the Gamecube. The game is unclear story. The players become a narrator to guide the characters. In the game, you will play the role of Patronus, who guides Kalas and his friends to explore the kingdom in the sky. Before participating in the game, you have to learn about Magnus, which are cards, representing the nature of the various items in the game’s world.
Basically, the players have two tasks: control the Kalas group to defeat the enemies and collect new Magnus. Before participating in a battle, you have to select Magnus cards and arrange them to create a deck of cards. Each has a different ability, and they are similar to a warehouse which contains collected items. Firstly, your cards are quite weak, and you can only win against low level monsters. Avoiding confrontation with strong monsters is a wise action for you to accumulate a lot of power. Each battle will take place in a Turn-base style, you will use each cards to kill monsters. Items that you collect after defeating monsters will be stored in the corresponding Magnus.
Besides, the Magnus system creates the game’s creativity. They have many functions such as burning opponents, physical attacks, restoring HP and supporting characters. It is hard for players to find rare attributes so destroying many enemies is the only way to become stronger. Collecting new Magnus is not easy, and you have to complete many different tasks. Without weak Magnus, you can create many different decks to destroy opponents in special ways and use the Magnus’ power.
The graphics are quite beautiful. With a top-down perspective, the players easily detect monsters and attack them. The environmental details are not sharp but the skill effects are good. In conclusion, although the graphics of the game are normal, the system of beautiful skills will attract the players.
