From the Sonic Adventure’s success, Sonic Team decided to develop the next version, Sonic Adventure 2. This new game was available for the Sega Dreamcast platform and Sega published worldwide on June 23, 2001. Like its previous, this game was also released on four platforms, including PlayStation 3, Microsoft Windows, Xbox 360, and GameCube. The version for GameCube was available in late 2001 and early 2002. For Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and Microsoft Windows, the version for them was on October 2, 2012. Besides, Sonic Adventure 2 is also the last game of the Sonic the Hedgehog series which was provided for Sega Dreamcast, after Sega stopped developing console devices.
The story has no change from the Sonic the Hedgehog series. Doctor Ivo “Eggman” Robotnik continued to research new methods to defeat his eternal enemy, Sonic. During his work, Eggman found a diary of Professor Gerald Robotnik, Eggman’s grandfather. Eggman knew that inside GUN’s security facility was storing some powerful weapons, which could help him destroy Sonic and rule the world. It is the Ultimate Life Form. With useful information from the diary, Eggman set up a new plan to reach Ultimate Life Form. Sonic with his friends will continue the journey against evil to protect the world.
Unlike the previous versions, Sonic Adventure 2 has a more interesting and addictive challenge system. Instead of controlling heroes and fighting evil, this version allows players to control the villains. From there, the challenge system has two stages. The first, Hero, allows control of three characters, Knuckles the Echidna, Sonic the Hedgehog, and Miles “Tails” Prower. The second is Dark, which provides three villains to use, including Doctor Eggman, Rouge the Bat, and Shadow the Hedgehog. Besides two fighting stages, the game has three different challenges. The first is the challenge to go fast-moving scenes of Shadow and Sonic. Next is the omnidirectional shooting challenge of Eggman and Miles. Finally, the adventurous action stages are Rouge and Knuckles.
Similar to the first version, Sonic Adventure 2 has still beautiful 3D graphics and more sharp image details. Besides, some scenes are based on the context of San Francisco and Yosemite National Park.
