Information

The Sega Genesis (also known as Mega Drive) is a home video game console developed and published by SEGA Company. This is the 4th gaming console announced by SEGA, which is seen as the successor to Master System, a previously unsuccessful console. Initially, Mega Drive was the official name that SEGA chose when releasing this product in Japan. When it officially entered the North American market in 1998, Genesis was the name chosen. Outside of North America, it owns many different names based on regions and distributors. For example, the device names are Ozisoft in Australia, Tec Toy in Brazil, and Super Gam Boy in the Korean market (distributed by Samsung). Although there are different names like Genesis is known to be more popular. All versions share the same hardware configuration.

Genesis’s strength is having a better configuration than many competitors when it is equipped with Sega’s System 16, Motorola 68000 processor, and much other impressive hardware. Another great thing about this device is that the device is compatible with the library of nearly 900 previously released games on the Master System.

Although it did not succeed in the Japanese market due to the overwhelming pressure of competition from Nintendo and NEC, Genesis has enjoyed a great reception from North American players. Already nearly 40 million devices have been sold in this market. One of the reasons for this success is due to the excellent game library SEGA brings, they are completely suitable for the home entertainment needs of North Americans.

Due to the strong growth of other developers, SEGA was unable to withstand the storm and confirmed that they discontinued Genesis in 1997. This action is confirmed to be ready for the birth of a completely new gaming console in the near future (Dreamcast).
