Dragon Ball Z – Super Butoden is the first version of Dragon Ball Z: Butōden (series). This game has fighting style, and players can control many different characters to experience. Bandai released this version on March 20, 1993 for the Japanese market. Besides, two countries in Europe, France and Spain, can experience in SNES on November 30, 1993.

The Gameplay

In the game, players can use 8 basic characters (Imperfect Cell, Frieza, Goku, Piccolo, Vegeta, Android 16, Android 18, and Android 20). After completing some special challenges, players can unlock and control 5 new characters. They are Super Saiyan Vegeta, Super Saiyan Gohan, Super Saiyan Goku, Super Saiyan Future Trunks, and Perfect Cell. In addition, each character has a unique battle skill system. You can combine offensive and defensive skills along with smart moves to defeat the enemies. The number of special fighting skills is very diverse, players only have to accumulate enough required energy – Ki (also known as Energy Wave) to activate these unique skills. For example, Vegeta can use Final Flash or Goku uses Kamehameha to finish off the opponent.

The Game modes

Dragon Ball Z – Super Butoden has 3 game modes as Story Mode, Tournament Mode, and Combat Mode. In which, Story Mode is based on the Piccolo Jr. Saga’s events to Cell Games Saga (from the Dragon Ball Z series). This game brings over 11 different battles to explore. In Tournament Mode, there are 8 characters to participate in the competition to find the champion. This mode brings many different rounds, and each match will be held at a stage of the World Martial Arts Tournament. In Combat Mode, you can create a match to compete with the CPU or another player.

In particular, you can choose 1 of the 13 controllable characters to participate in the competition. During a battle, the screen will display two different status bars for each character, including a vitality bar and a power bar. The health bar will be fully charged at the start, and the other requires the player to move in accordance with the requirements to fully recharge the Energy Wave. You can participate in combat in 2 environments, at ground level, and in the air. An interesting feature is that it allows the two characters to move apart from each other on the ring. For example, one character can stand and the other can fly in the air. When it happens, a red border will appear on the screen (splitting the screen in two parts with different areas) to divide the distance between the two characters.
